Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Fort Matanzas
We took a day trip to both the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Fort Matanzas on July 23.
The Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station is the tallest lighthouse in Florida and the second largest in the country, standing 175 feet tall. Its building was complete in 1887, when the area was known as Mosquito Inlet. We all climbed the 203 steps to the top, and boy was that hot & exhausting! You can see how neat the spiral staircase looked from inside, especially if you click on it to enlarge.
Fort Matanzas is a Spanish outpost fort, built in 1740-1742, and located on Rattlesnake Island. I took a photo of Antony and his girlfriend, Megan, while we were waiting for the ferry to take us to the fort. You can also see a very thirsty Michael, trying to eat his way through the water bottle!
We had a great time, exploring some wonderful historical sites.
